PTW is one of the largest architectural firms in Australia and the Pacific
Region with 150 staff and offices in Sydney and Beijing. Areas of expertise
include sports and Olympic projects, residential, cultural, health, master
planning and interiors.
Jones Coulter Young has developed a reputation for design excellence
and innovation in Western Australia through its involvement in high profile
urban design, transport and civic design projects.
Their design concept includes the following elements:
- All the principal elements are sculpturally articulated yet unified
visually by the first-floor lobby with its glass façade sheltered
by folded mesh sun and wind screens.
- The highly adaptable “black box” studio theatre with its
grid and a surrounding passage will enable extensive exploration of
experimental and in-the-round performance styles.
- The building, itself folded into the William/Roe Street site, cleverly
uses both existing heritage buildings and new built forms to create
a living intervention into the existing streetscape.
- This folding of space has informed key elements of the building,
creating a simple yet delicate language which is reflected in the sun
and wind shades, the fly tower and the walls that enclose spaces and
building parts.
- Japanese traditions of origami and lantern-making combine with ideas
of layered papers; coloured and embossed to create changing and beautiful
screening systems for glazed areas.
- Folded sunscreens opaque to the west and transparent to the south
shield the building from the intensity of western light and the force
of the south westerlies but equally create “shadows”, people
seen in silhouette, layering of fabrics and etched penetrations casting
shadows and expressing light patterns.
- Extensive use of aluminium cladding and framing systems as well as
the use of perforated aluminium mesh.
- Our target is to create a building based on smart systems, both passive
and active (as appropriate), which focus on high quality environments
with low energy use and low maintenance. This includes maximising the
use of daylight in suitable areas, finding smart, efficient and effective
energy minimising options where artificial lighting is required.
