Studio theatre long section/north and main auditorium and studio theatre cross section Site plan

Their design concept includes the following elements:

  • A dramatic glowing presence forms an iconic landmark on the Perth skyline. The egg-shaped volume is an intriguing presence in the city which invites people to the centre – its soft and sweeping form drawing them to the performance space at its core.
  • The construction of the egg is organised into a series of layers which provide for the spatial, acoustic and functional requirements of the auditorium within.
  • The outermost layer – a delicate veil of fritted EFTE (a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene) “pillows” – provides weather protection to the interior and a dramatic billboard for the theatre at night
  • Like a Russian doll, the main stage is organised around a series of diminishing shells. The audience is drawn closely around the stage to maximise the intensity of their relationship with the performer.
  • A horizontal pergola shades the sequence of new public spaces around the theatre. One pergola extends over the parking plaza, inviting people into the foyer. A second pergola ties the studio theatre to the courtyard and the replaced Art House buildings. The height of each pergola is carefully scaled to relate the neighbouring buildings.
