John Wardle Architects in association with Donaldson + Warn

Melbourne, Perth

John Wardle Architects has a particular interest in creating intricate and finely detailed buildings. The firm has extensive experience in designing and delivering large institutional and public buildings.

Donaldson + Warn is responsible for the new City of Perth Performing Art Facility, demonstrating the firm’s recent experience in designing and delivering a building for the performing arts.

Their design proposal includes the following elements:

  • The new building will be a reinforced concrete structure with five levels above ground and a basement level below. The proposed cladding materials are precast concrete, stainless steel and colour bond metal cladding, and glass protected by sun shading systems.
  • The main entry to the building will be located at the corner of Roe and William Streets, but it can also be entered from the courtyard spaces.
  • A large foyer at ground floor extends from the main entry through to the courtyards beyond, strengthening the link between the city and its cultural centre.
  • The main theatre foyer is located at level 1, dress circle at level 2 and the studio theatre foyer at level 3. Wide staircases will connect the different foyer spaces creating a dramatic journey through the layered spaces.
  • As well as the main theatre and studio theatre, there are other spaces in and around the building that offer opportunities to frame a setting for the performance.
  • The north-facing audience courtyard is activated by the ground floor foyer, restaurant, the cookery and laundry building and the connection to James Street.
  • It is a setting for the theatre of the everyday, where the audience mixes with, and perhaps becomes, players.
  • The bar adjacent to the main entry at the corner of William and Roe Streets is an abstraction of the long demolished Governor Broome Hotel. It recreates the traditions of the street corner and we hope, in time, it will become a ‘hangout’ for the theatre community.
  • Sustainability initiatives include sun shading devices, high performance glazing, solar hot water, grey water system and rainwater harvesting.
